Kirk in Chiang Mai

I first met Kirk on a huge project in Farmington, New Mexico. I didn't really work with him but I was pretty new to the CRM gig and always looking for work. Kirk gave me a list of all of the CRM firms listed by state. It was like the Holy Grail for chronically out of work shovel bums. Nowadays, it's easy to get such a list, but this was the mid-90s and the internet wasn't much use for folks living out of hotels in those days.

Then about three years later, I had moved to Portland and started grad school when I got hired for a project in Depoe Bay, OR. I was assigned to partner up with this guy, a big guy who looked pretty familiar. Well, it took about three minutes before we realized why we looked so familiar to each other. We sepnt the rest of that summer excavating a shell midden, watching bald eagles terrorize a seagull rookery and talking music, mostly.

Kirk's enthusiasm for new experiences and new ideas led him around the globe and he crossed paths with so many people, leaving a lasting impression. I'm sure there are only three degrees of separation from Kirk Johnson among archaeologist in this country (and several others). For that reason, we can rest assured that he'll live on in the stories told on archaeological sites for years to come.

Cheers,
